Apple Pear Crumble

Apple Pear CrumbleI’m a sucker for an apple crumble, but I don’t like all the added sugar. After searching and playing with many variations, I finally hit upon one my family loved with no added sugar that has the added benefit of no-flour. We’re not gluten-free, but I don’t see a reason to toss flour all over the place either.

I used a mix of all the Farm Direct pears and apples I had on hand – IPM, organic, Asian, red, Bosc, pink, green… all the friends into the pool. Use whatever you have on hand.

In the Dish
3 apples, cored and chopped
2 pears, cored and chopped
1 tsp lemon juice

Crumble Topping
1 heaping cup walnuts
3 tbsp butter or coconut oil
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tbsp vanilla

Directions
Heat oven to 350. Core and chop apples and pears. Peeling the fruit is not necessary, but you can if you like. Mix fruit together with lemon juice and place in the bottom of a baking dish, stacked up – not in a single layer. Place nuts in food processor and gently pulse to break the nuts up slightly. Put remaining ingredients in food processor and pulse to form the crumble. Spread crumble over fruit. It’s ok if it’s not even as when the juices of the fruit bubble up to the top through some gaps, that’s even better. Bake for 30 minutes and check. Bake in 15-minute increments until fruit is bubbling up and topping has crisped a little. Serve warm. If desired, a little dollop of vanilla ice-cream on top makes this extra delicious.
